Biography

Anthony St Leger born about 1605 was the eldest child of Warham St Leger.^[1] He was born into a prestigious family with influence. His father Warham was the son of Anthony St Leger. It was Warham who was knighted in 1608, and sailed with Sir Walter Raleigh to Guiana from 1617-1618 when his son Anthony was about 10.

Anthony St Leger was noted in the will of his grandmother, Lady Katherine (Smythe) Scott, the will being made in Jan 1616/1617^[2].

In 1631 Anthonys father Warham died.

In 1633 Sir Anthony St Leger and Lady Bridget St Leger are listed in the Christening record of their daughter Mary in Linton, Kent^[3]

In 1634 their second daughter Margrett was born in Linton, Kent^[4]

In 1636 their first son Lucia was born in Boughton Monchelsea, Kent^[5]

Anthony married Mary Norwood on 14th April 1640 in Boughton-Malherbe^[6]

In the 1660’s Anthony was made Master of the Mint.^[7]

Anthony probably died in 1680 in Holborn, London. In the record of his death his name is spelled St Legar Esquire^[8]

Research Notes

• This profile has been edited, sourced and cleaned up from three merged profiles, all from Ancestry trees.
• Clearly a well researched Noble line, yet Ancestry/Wikipedia etc have seemingly failed to properly Research Anthony. Although free online searches for this period are sparse, there are reasonable grounds to assume that before Anthony married Mary Norwood, he married Bridgett. Therefore research currently suggests that Mary Norwood should be removed as Mary St Legers mother.
• There are a number of conflicting sources available, this source from Cambridge University Alumni available to view on Ancestry states he became Warden of the Mint in 1669 and that he married a Barbara Sherley before he married Mary Norwood. No mention of a Bridget.^[9]
• Online family trees are plentiful, 50% attribute Bridgett as Anthony’s wife and 50% attribute Mary Norwood. All list Warham as his father. Although no Christening record can be found at this time for Anthony it is unlikely that there were two different Anthony’s living in Ulcombe, Kent. The Christenings of the children in Linton are about 15 minutes from Ulcombe.
• Online trees show much confusion of the few sources that are available. This is because Anthony son of Warhams great-grandfather was also Anthony son of Warham. There are some extremely confused trees available online.
